Step inside Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Aotearoa’s oldest public art gallery, and discover how a cherished 19th‑century landmark is being carefully future‑proofed for the next generation.

Led by Richard Boyter, Senior Facilities Manager, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited – and winner of the 2025 Sustainability and Environmental Impact Award for the Gallery’s pioneering decarbonisation project – this exclusive Behind‑the‑Spaces tour will take you through the gallery while shining a light on two major transformational projects:

• The Heritage Restoration Project: Officially opened in 1888, this iconic building has recently undergone a Heritage Restoration Project: Kia Whakahou, Kia Whakaora, a multi‑stage programme to renew the roof, protect the historic façade, and enhance the gallery’s external lighting.
• Decarbonisation Project: In November 2023, the gallery reached a major sustainability milestone, completing a decarbonisation project that replaced its gas‑fired heating system with efficient electric heat pumps. The first phase installed three water‑sourced units, eliminating the gallery’s largest source of CO₂ emissions. By capturing and reusing waste heat from existing chillers, the system maintains the precise climate needed to protect priceless artworks while sharply reducing the gallery’s carbon footprint.
